Booklists for Educators

As a former employee of the Edmonton Public Library, I hope that creating various booklists can help other teachers, or even someone looking for children's literature to use in the classroom or elsewhere. Some of the booklists you'll find are ones I've used personally or titles that I have searched for. By clicking on the link you will get directed to a booklist I've created via the EPL website. I love for people to share any books or booklists they have found enjoyable and useful, so please don't hesitate in letting me know which ones have been your favorite!

Why is reading important?

Reading is an important skill where I believe should be fostered to children as early as possible. Learning to read helps children expand their knowledge of vocabulary, their knowledge about phonics and understanding meanings through print words and visuals. It can also be a fun task for teachers and parents to model as reading can occur in various ways, such as listening to group read-alouds or making it a game of some sort!

1. Preschool Page-Turners that are always popular with the little ones! Brown Bear, Brown Bear and Goodnight Moon are my absolute favorites. I always incorporate actions when reading BBBB so that it's more interactive with the readers! And with Goodnight Moon, there's a satirical version of it called Goodnight iPad, that's more up-to-date with the current generation. You can "watch" or hear someone read it out loud here, it's a worthwhile chuckle!

2. Mo Willem's Pigeon Books Series! These books are super great for children's read-alouds! The interactive components with children absolutely the best and if you time reading it out loud perfectly, you'll always keep their interest going. The humor is what I love the most as both the adults and the children will immediately laugh at!

3. Mo Willem's Elephant & Piggie Series! I don't know what's better, these series or the pigeon series. Both are honestly hilarious, either listening to it being read or reading it yourself!

4. Pete the Cat books! One of my all-time favorite series, as I personally was Pete himself during a Fringe performance for a reader's theatre. Eric Litwin manages to create catchy Pete the Cat tunes that gets stuck in your head for about a week. It's funny though to see kids learn the tune, all ready to sing the next time you see them!

5. This booklist includes books that are interactive for children best under age 6. I've used these books myself during my summer job and they always have not only been mine, but the children's favorite stories to hear too. Check them out here

6. This booklist consist of interactive books that are great for school-age children. I don't have a lot of books here yet, just because I'm having trouble finding books that best fit this list. Out of all my booklists so far, I would love to have recommendations!

7. This booklist contains the reader's theatre setlist when our group performed at the Kids Fringe Festival in 2014. Performing there was a requirement of my summer job and truthfully, it was such a rush! If there's any stories or children's books that you guys used as extraordinary reader's theatres, I'm all ears!

8. For my English curriculum class, we had to do this major assignment where you had to choose 10 different children's literature resources and select different lesson activities to go with them. You can read my blog post about it here and even read the books I selected here

9. Edmonton Public Library Program Under the Sea in 1 2 3! in Feb 2015. You can find the books that were read at the program and read them yourselves by clicking here
